Doxologia (from Revelations 7:10-12)

Ily Matthew Maniano (Philippines)

Maniano’s very first composition is a homage to God and a song of thanksgiving. The work was envisioned during a long bus ride with the Philippine Madrigal Singers from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn, Argentina as all flights were canceled due to the eruption of Puyehue volcano in Chile.

Et clamabant voce magna dicentes:

Salus Deo nostro

qui sedet super thronum et agno

Benedictio et claritas et sapientia

gratiarum actio et honor et virtus et fortitudo

Deo nostro in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

And they cried out with a loud voice saying

Salvation to our God

Which sitteth upon the throne and to the lamb.

Blessing, and glory, and wisdon,

thanksgiving, and honour and power and might

be unto our God forever and ever. Amen

Tiptipa Kemmakem

Nilo Alcala II (Philippines)

Tiptipa Kemmakem is a gibberish game chant of children from Bontoc, Mountain Province in Northern Philippines. Children sit or stand in any formation and on the word tiptipa clap their hands on the beat. They then close and open their fingers on the word kemmakem done also on the beat.

Tiptipa Kemmakem (gibberish, no literal translation)

Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram

Mishaal Surti (India – Canada)

Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram is an example of a Hindu bhajan that would often be heard during a ceremony or service throughout India. The text of this bhajan conveys a message of peace, harmony, and unity - bringing people together regardless of their backgrounds. This bhajan would often be passed on through generations through an aural tradition - sung as call and response that brings the community together in song.

Rama, Lord of the Raghus

Sita and Rama, the redeemers of the fallen

Sing the praises of Sita and Rama

God is known by many names, such as Ishwar and Allah

Grant us wisdom and understanding

Trống Cơm

arr. UE Tran (Vietnam – Canada)

"Trống Cơm'' is a Northern Vietnamese folk song commonly sung by children and accompanied by traditional musical instruments. This song prominently features the "trống cơm," a rice drum – "trống" meaning drum and "cơm" meaning rice. The rice drum is a small cylinder-shaped instrument with two ends connected by a strap. The artist places a small amount of cooked rice inside the two stretched drumheads' skin to enhance the texture and adjust the sound quality. When performing, the artist wears the drum in front of their belly. Within the song's context, the image of the drum being carried in front of the belly symbolizes pregnancy. However, the song delves into the lives of unmarried, pregnant women. The children born from unfortunate circumstances follow the drumbeat to their mothers, who carry the drum for nine months and ten days. Yet, these mothers continue to wait for their "predestined fate," figuratively referred to as "khách tang bồng," signifying travellers who have ventured far away. This evokes the question, "Longing for whom?" Who are these women longing for? An unknown figure who will never return. The song portrays the blindness of love through the metaphor of half-closed eyes, entangled in the intricate silk web of pinkish love, spun like a spider's thread. Some may interpret the difference between the sombre context and the upbeat and joyful rhythm as a means of satirizing the plight of unmarried pregnant women. However, diverse perspectives abound, and discerning the precise intentions underlying this folk song remains an elusive pursuit.

Một bầy tang tình con nhện

Ô mấy giăng tơ

Giăng tơ ố mấy đi tìm

Em nhớ thương ai?

Duyên nợ khách tang bồng

Tình tang tình tang

Tang tang tình tang

Tình bằng có cái trống cơm

Khen ai khéo vỗ

Ố mấy bông mà nên bông

Một bầy tang tình con nít

Ố mấy lội sông

Ố mấy đi tìm

Em nhớ thương ai?

Đôi con mắt ố mấy lim dim

Tình tang, thương ai

Trống cơm ai vỗ í mà nên bông

Một bầy con nít lội sông í a đi tìm

Thương ai con mắt í mà lim dim

Một bầy con nhện đi tìm í mà giăng tơ

Trống cơm

Who played the rice drum?

Who made the flowers bloom?

A band of children

Swim, swim in the river

So as to find the one they loved.

The half-closed eyes,

A cluster of spiders,

Oh, spinning the webs

The silk web of pinkish love,

longing for whom?

Our predestined fate far away,

Your sweetheart far away,

Rice drum.

And I Thank You

In our lives, nothing’s ever same in this ever changing world.

It’s True!

Seize the moment

Brave the storm but there is just one thing I have to say

Somewhere deep inside my heart

I’m grateful for my life

I think of all the memories that’s made my days so bright

And as we walk the pages of our lives we stop to find

A moment in time

And I Thank you

I Thank you for the memories of time

I Thank you

I Thank you for the dreams you’ve helped me find

It’s not the years in your life but life in your years

Just believe

I believed!

And I Thank you

I Thnk you for the memories of time

I Thank you

I Thank you for ht edreams you’ve helped me find

And We Thank you

We Thank you for the journey and the love

And We Thank you

We Thank you for the dreams and the faith in our hearts you will live!

Ah! I Thank you!
